Miss Saigon is based on Giacomo Puccini‘s Madama Butterfly, a three-act opera that premiered in 1904. The Italian libretto is by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. They took the story from a short story by John Luther Long which was based in part on autobiographical work by Pierre Loti. David Belasco, one of the most important U.S. theatre makers at the turn of the century created a play based on the same material.
